What is sensory integration and how to support it?

The concept of "sensory integration" of the vast majority has already hit the ears. What is this process? The topic has been extremely popular for several years, due to the increasing diagnosis of sensory integration disorders, which are observed in young children. Development pedagogues and psychologists emphasize the role that parents can play with the support of the proper development of their child - from the first days of the baby's life.

Sensory integration - definition

The world is perceived and seen with a few senses at the same time - this is due to sensory integration. Thanks to her, man is capable of seeing and understanding the various stimuli that surround him. Reaching information about fragrances, sounds or touch is then transmitted to the brain and properly processed - thanks to this the body is able to produce a specific reaction. Sensory integration is a process that still begins in fetal life and lasts up to about 7 years of age. This is a sensitive period in which the child needs to be provided with adequate sensory stimulation, so that his senses interact well with each other.

Sensory integration

What is affected by correct sensory integration?

Sensory integration affects the proper functioning of man. Thanks to this, he can perform daily activities without effort. He can easily receive and interpret stimuli reaching him. If the integration is disturbed, then the toddler can be hypersensitive to a specific type of stimulation, or not react in situations that require it. What are the effects? The anger and frustration of the child and his parents, as well as difficulties in relationships with peers. Sensory integration disorders are visible especially at school, where there are specific framework and rules of conduct.

Sensory integration - how to support its development?

Supporting a toddler in sensory development, contrary to appearances, is not difficult. With the current level of specialist knowledge, we know how to stimulate the senses of the youngest to cooperate correctly. How to stimulate them to work? First of all, it is worth providing the child:

  • tactile stimuli - tenderness with loved ones (stroking, hugging), as well as touching various textures and walking barefoot,
  • auditory stimuli - talking to a child, singing and listening to music, as well as learning about sounds from the environment,
  • Exercises for motor coordination - Time on the playground, cycling, simple gymnastic exercises.

Sensory toys

Sensory toys - child development support

Sensory toys are a great way to stimulate the child's different senses. They make it easier for the toddler to explore visual and auditory stimuli, and at the same time they are a source of joy. Many of them strengthen motor coordination, which in the case of infants can be helpful in learning to walk. Instead of classic models, it is worth choosing sensory toys that strengthen the proper functioning of the child. This can be a specially designed ratchet, booklet or activity mat - something that will certainly go into the taste of an infant.

Sensory integration - wise disposal of free time

Technological progress brought many amenities. In the case of children who should learn the world in a different way - it often works to the detriment. Instead of spending time in front of a TV or tablet, toddlers should experience more diverse stimulation during the day. Summer fun barefoot in sand or helping parents kneading dough are simple ideas to diversify everyday activities.

Sensory integration in the field

The child's free time can be supplemented with appropriate games that support sensory integration. Here are examples of suggestions:

  • painting with paints with the use of hands and feet,
  • writing a finger on the sand,
  • molding from salt or dough,
  • Creating a unique sensory path.

Simple classes can influence the child's sensory integration. Toys, home duties or special activities - there are really many possibilities to support the development of toddlers!
